Reorganizing Your Garage for Maximum Efficiency and Use

Let’s face it, your garage is so much more than just a place to park your car! It’s your storage unit, shed, home gym, and tool desk. But after a while, it can easily become a messy and inefficient use of space, which not only makes it hard to store items but also makes it quite unsightly.

Now is the perfect time to get outside, clean out your garage, and update it for maximum efficiency and use. This will not only help update your home if you’re getting ready to sell soon, but it will also provide you with additional storage space and an overall better-looking garage. Out with the Old

This part of the process is the hardest but will make all the difference when setting your garage up for success. The first thing you’ll want to do is take everything out of your garage and sort through what is necessary to keep, what you are not sure of, and what you can easily get rid of.

This sorting and purging process will help you declutter the garage and will make putting everything back into its rightful place easy. For the items in which you are not sure about, it’s best to keep in a pile at the side and store them towards the front of your garage. After a few months, you can assess and review to see how often you use these items, which will help you determine if you really need them.

We all use our garage for different reasons. Some may use it to hold storage and their home gym, others may use it as their garden shed and for their cars. Whatever the case, once you’ve gone through all of your items, it’s best to then review what you need to use your garage for, and how you’d like to set it up.

Purchase the Necessary Storage Shelves and Equipment

So you’ve gone through your possessions and you know how you want your garage to look, now it’s time to purchase the storage equipment you need to make it happen.

It’s best to not keep any items on the floor of your garage for safekeeping, so items like stackable storage bins, or open shelving units are great! We also recommend wiring in shelves to keep them secure and safe, all while storing everything you need.

Don’t forget about the overhead space! If you’re able to add in some shelves above, it’s best to do so. This is great for storing items like sleds, gardening tools, or holiday decorations.

Categorize Your Items

The best way to prevent your garage from becoming messy and disorganized once again is to categorize your items. This will ensure that everything gets put back in the right place and prevents you from creating clutter when trying to find things.

A label maker is a great resource for this, especially if a lot of your items are in sealed boxes. It may be tedious, but in the long run, this step really helps to keep things organized and categorized for maximum efficiency and use.

Clean Up and Put Your Items Away

With your new shelves in place and your items all categorized, now is the perfect time to give your garage a clean. Sweep up any dirt and debris and throw away all the garbage so you can start with a fresh, new, and clean garage.

Once your clean-up is finished it’s time to put everything back. Make sure to keep all items categorized and try to put highly used items in easy to reach places. Items you seldomly used can go on the higher or lower shelves.
